A Bayesian approach to detecting change points in climatic records

چکیده

Given distinct climatic periods in the various facets of the Earth’s climate system, many attempts have been made to determine the exact timing of ‘change points’ or regime boundaries. However, identification of change points is not always a simple task. A time series containing N data points has approximately N distinct placements of k change points, rendering brute force enumeration futile as the length of the time series increases. Moreover, how certain are we that any one placement of change points is superior to the rest? This paper introduces a Bayesian Change Point algorithm which provides uncertainty estimates both in the number and location of change points through an efficient probabilistic solution to the multiple change point problem. To illustrate its versatility, the Bayesian Change Point algorithm is used to analyse both the NOAA/NCDC annual global surface temperature anomalies time series and the much longer δ18O record of the Plio-Pleistocene. Bayesian Estimation of the Multiple Change Points in Gamma Process Using X-bar chart

The process personnel always seek the opportunity to improve the processes. One of the essential steps for process improvement is to quickly recognize the starting time or the change point of a process disturbance. Different from the traditional normally distributed assumption for a process, this study considers a process which follows a gamma process. In addition, we consider the possibility o...

Improving the Performance of Bayesian Estimation Methods in Estimations of Shift Point and Comparison with MLE Approach

A Bayesian analysis is used to detect a change-point in a sequence of independent random variables from exponential distributions. In This paper, we try to estimate change point which occurs in any sequence of independent exponential observations. The Bayes estimators are derived for change point, the rate of exponential distribution before shift and the rate of exponential distribution after s...

Dynamic Frailty and Change Point Models for Recurrent Events Data

Abstract. We present a Bayesian analysis for recurrent events data using a nonhomogeneous mixed Poisson point process with a dynamic subject-specific frailty function and a dynamic baseline intensity func- tion. The dynamic subject-specific frailty employs a dynamic piecewise constant function with a known pre-specified grid and the baseline in- tensity uses an unknown grid for the piecewise ...

Dynamical detection of change points in long time se- ries

We consider the problem of detecting change points (structural changes) in long sequences of data, whether in a sequential fashion or not, and without assuming prior knowledge of the number of these change points. We reformulate this problem as the Bayesian filtering and smoothing of a non standard state-space model. Towards this goal, we build a hybrid algorithm that relies on particle filteri...
